1. Sarees
The whole seven yards
Touted to be the most sensuous attire, the saree has been redefining fashion through the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Right from the OG retro queen Mumtaz who took the world by storm in her bright orange body-hugging drape, to Sridevi, whose blue chiffon saree set a gazillion hearts ablaze, and of course, Madhuri Dixit’s dazzling purple satin saree, aplomb with a backless blouse, this humble attire not only caught the attention of the fashion police but garnered a cult fan-following too.
2. Lehengas
Twirl and swirl in all its glory
While flashy lehengas were always around, it was only in the 90s that these flamboyant, glitzy ensembles gained popularity. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made lehengas look effortless and classy in the hit film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, it was the ace, magnum opus director Mr. Bhansali, who infused life into these extravagant pieces and ensured a larger-than-life visual treat for his audience. 3. Overalls
A little sporty, a little sassy
More popularly known as Dungarees, this super-comfy attire was put on the map by Kajol in the award-winning movie ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. Not to forget, this hipster classic also found its way in Jennifer Aniston aka Rachel Greene’s wardrobe in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. This 90s hipster classic was generation-defining, with scores of women making it their style statement. Cute, casual and comfortable, this tomboyish outfit is pure love!
4. Overlined lips
An over-the-top fashion favourite
While today’s generation believes that less is more, the good ol’ days were the polar opposite. With an out-of-the-box fashion scene revving up the 80s, the out-of-the-line lip was a fashion favourite. Going overboard with lipstick and applying it generously over the lip-line was a trend that soon caught on. This not only make lips look fuller and more sensuous but also made for the perfect pout.

5. Exaggerated liner
As bold as it gets
Right from the early 60s to the 80s, a bold exaggerated liner was a makeup staple. A thick swipe of black liner generously smeared into a perfect winged eye was what most leading ladies opted for. This look not only accentuated the eyes but also ensured it added the much-needed drama on-screen. 6. The fringe
A cut above the rest
The Fringe or more popularly known as the ‘Sadhana Cut’, was a rage in the 60s. Inspired by Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn, this cutesy fringe created history and had the style police in a tizzy. 7. The bouffant
The big Bollywood style statement
This fashion fad back in the day was big, very literally so. With hair piled up on top, and loose wisps framing the fame, this look was popularized by A-listers like Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore, Sadhana, Saira Banu, and the likes. It has since then gained a loyal following with many Bollywood beauties today following suit, and giving it their own twist, like a half bouffant. Undoubtedly, this hairstyle is a class act.
