How to treat dull and lifeless hair

With the holiday season right around the corner, it is no doubt that we want to look our very best. But the dry weather can be especially harsh on the skin and hair, coming in the way of our picture-perfect selfies. If you already complain about dry and dull tresses, below are some super simple steps that will come handy.

Remember: One of the main reasons for dull and lifeless hair is weak roots. This can be treated with proper nutrition. Now that we have that cleared, there are some things you can do topically for increased shine and lustre.

Step 1: Oil and Steam

Apart from drinking water and taking in fruits, you should be oiling your hair. Before doing so, first comb thoroughly and detangle and only then give a proper message to your scalp with oil. You can use a combination such as almond oil, coconut oil and castor oil. Apply on the strands too for a silky mane. Oiling increases the blood circulation and gives healthy scalp and hair. It should be done at least twice a week.

Post oiling, you can give it a home steam treatment. Just soak the towel in boiling hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap around your hair. This will help the oil to thoroughly seep into your strands and scalp.

Step 2: Shampoo with Keratin

The next obvious step is to shampoo your tresses. It is best to opt for a product with keratin (the very protein your hair is made of) such as Tresemme which aids in its restoration.  Remember, a good shampoo will make your hair frizz free and super manageable.

Step 3: Go for a deep conditioner

Dull and lifeless hair needs more conditioning. The ideal one will lock in the moisture and make your tresses smoother. You can opt for conditioners with argan oil that is known for treating dry and lifeless hair.

Here is a trick, once a week, keep your conditioner on for half an hour for it to really soak up the moisture. You can rinse the tresses with natural ingredients such as coconut milk or apple cider vinegar. Another option is to also use a leave-in conditioner to add some extra shine to hair.

Choose from a wide range of quality shampoos and conditioners.

Weekly conditioner masks

Once in two weeks, apply some deep conditioning masks that will make hair even smooth and glossy.  Spread that onto hair roots as well as hair stands and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse with shampoo and you will be left with a beautiful and strong mane.

Below are some natural conditioner masks:

  • Tea decoction (soaked overnight) and lemon
  • Methi (soaked), sprouts (soaked) and coconut kernel – all blended together
  • Henna and curd
  • Shikakai powder and water
  • Paste of ripe banana and egg white

If you do all of this, you will notice a positive difference in your tresses. You can even take Biotin supplements to make your hair super strong. Do consult your doctor before you do so.
