Medicinal Plants You Can Grow in Your Garden

Many plants, herbs and trees are considered to have medicinal properties. Treatment in Indian homes is deeply rooted in Ayurveda, Unani and Naturopathy. The three branches have stressed on the need of growing medicinal herbs, plants and trees in one’s own garden. The leaves, stems, roots, seeds and sometimes bark of many plants can be used to treat various illnesses. They can be had raw, in the form of soups, as a paste or even infused in water. Tulsi

This needs a warm temperature, soil that does not absorb much water and regular watering. Tulsi leaves are excellent for cold and cough. It helps in reducing blood pressure and controlling diabetes.

Neem

Another excellent plant that grows into a shady tree is neem. The neem leaves and the flowers have anti-bacterial properties. They are used for deworming naturally. Neem needs a lot of sunlight and a wide pot which can drain excess water.

Ajwain 

This medicinal plant is considered the perfect medicine for colds, coughs or any infections in the lungs in naturopathy. The leaves are boiled in water and given, especially, to small children who find it difficult to breathe as their respiratory tract is blocked because of phlegm. They can be grown in pots like money plants. They thrive in sunlight and don’t need much care.

Lemongrass

A perfect aromatic herb, lemongrass can be grown easily at home. Tropical conditions are ideal for its growth. The leaves and the oil is used for making medicines that treat digestive issues. Issues like spasms, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, flatulence and many others can be treated with the fragrant leaves of the plant. The oil is also used as an astringent for destroying germs and bacteria. The leaves can be boiled in water and had as a warm tea after a meal to improve digestion.

Aloe vera

Aloe Vera is a wonder plant that is used for medicinal purposes and beauty treatments. The gel of the stem is excellent for soothing burns. Skin injuries like cuts and insect bites and issues like acne and dandruff can not only be controlled but also cured by the gel of the stem. The juice is used to combat obesity. Aloe vera can be easily grown at home in pots or in the garden.

Curry leaves

Curry leaf is a powerful antioxidant. It aids in preventing and curing digestive issues and controlling diabetes. The leaves of this miracle plant are rich in vitamins and iron. It is considered the best nature’s gift for good hair and vision. Curry leaves need a lot of patience to grow. They require a lot of water but not a stagnant one. Direct sunlight may be harmful. They grow best if potted with a flowering plant like marigold.

Ginger

Ginger is a must-have herb in every Indian home. This root can easily be grown in every garden. This herb needs a tropically hot and humid climate with loamy soil that holds enough water for the herb to grow. They spread easily and quickly. Ginger is used in treatments for arthritis, cold, cough, morning sickness and even in controlling diabetes.

Pirandai or Devil’s backbone 

Veldt grape is succulent that needs to be grown in shade or away from direct sunlight. They cannot survive in excess water and do not need much care if left in shade. Pirandai stems are made into chutney or paste to cure digestive disorders. They are also excellent in treating bleeding gums and strengthening of bones.

Brahmi or Gotu kola

Brahmi is the most ancient found in India and also finds its mention in scriptures. This magical herb has found its way into nearly every Ayurvedic medicine. It can be used to treat respiratory problems like cold, cough etc. It offers a perfect remedy for skin diseases. It has anti-ageing properties, anti-fungal properties, anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant properties. In short, the ultimate plant at home.

There are innumerable plants that can be grown in every backyard. Each has its own utility and medicinal value. The use of various parts of plants as medicines has no side effects and instead offers a sustainable option to the world.
