The 80/20 Rule: Why Most of Your Workouts Should Feel Easy

For years, fitness culture has pushed one idea: if your workout doesn’t leave you exhausted and drenched in sweat, it doesn’t count. But that belief is misleading. Progress doesn’t come from going all out every single time.

In fact, research on elite athletes shows the opposite.

What Is the 80/20 Rule?

The 80/20 rule, also known as polarised training, is simple. Around 80% of your workouts should be low intensity, while only about 20% should be high intensity.

This pattern shows up repeatedly when scientists study top runners, cyclists, swimmers, and rowers. Most of their training is surprisingly easy, with occasional intense sessions.

Why Easy Workouts Matter

Low-intensity workouts build your endurance and help your body use oxygen more efficiently. They also train your body to burn fat for energy and strengthen the systems that support long-lasting stamina.

The mistake most people make is spending too much time in the middle zone. Workouts that feel “somewhat hard” are tiring enough to slow recovery but not intense enough to produce major fitness gains. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, plateaus, and even burnout.

What Does “Easy” Actually Mean?

Easy workouts should feel comfortable. You should be able to hold a conversation without struggling for breath. If you can talk in full sentences, you’re likely in the right zone.

For many people, this pace feels surprisingly slow. But that’s exactly the point.

How to Apply the 80/20 Rule

If you train five days a week, aim for four easy sessions and one hard session. Keep the easy days truly easy, and save your effort for the hard workouts.

Over time, you’ll likely notice that your easy pace improves and your hard sessions feel stronger.

Train Smarter, Not Harder

Most workouts should feel manageable, not exhausting. Easy training most of the time allows your body to recover, adapt, and perform better when it matters.

Slow down more often, push hard occasionally, and skip the constant middle effort. That’s the real path to long-term progress.
