A real, well-known Japanese dessert sandwich format, whipped cream and fruit layered between soft bread and sliced to reveal a colourful cross-section.
Prep time: 12 mins | Cook time: 0 (10 mins chilling) | Servings: 2
Ingredients
- 4 slices soft white bread, crusts removed
- 1 cup whipped cream, lightly sweetened
- 1/2 cup mixed fruit, sliced (strawberries, kiwi, mango work well)
- 1 tbsp condensed milk (optional, for extra sweetness)
Method
- Lay two slices of bread flat and spread a thick, even layer of whipped cream on each.
- Arrange the sliced fruit in a single layer over the cream on one slice, keeping the eventual slice pattern in mind.
- Add a thin drizzle of condensed milk over the fruit if using.
- Place the second cream-coated slice on top, cream-side down, and press gently to seal.
- Wrap tightly in cling film and chill for 10 minutes to firm up.
- Unwrap and slice diagonally with a sharp knife for a clean cross-section.
- Serve chilled.
Tip: Chilling is what makes a clean slice possible; don’t skip it, or the cream will squeeze out messily when cut.
