Why Should You Use Sunscreen During Winter

If you think that with the temperature dropped down drastically you can ease up on applying sunscreen, then here is something you should know about. During winter, our skin absolutely need some protection because the sun’s harmful rays are just as strong and damaging despite the drop in the temperature.

UVA radiation has immense power to reach deep into the skin causing wrinkles and increasing the risk of skin cancer. Though the cold temperature makes us feel that the sun is not as strong, UVA rays that damage the skin most are still very powerful. UVA rays are strong all-round the year.

UVB rays are mostly blocked by glass and clouds. But UVA rays can go through clouds and glass and cause damage to the skin.

It is not just sun who follows season, but also our skin follows the season. Since skin is pale and dry during winter, we have to adapt to the skin care routine with every seasonal change.

Cold air makes skin dry and very sensitive. Winter skin is more vulnerable to sun damage than the tanned summer skin. During winter, melanin concentration is reduced which is responsible for skin pigmentation (tan). Due to reduced UV radiation during winter, skin produces less melanin thus skin tan gets reduced naturally, but it gets more sensitive to UV radiation when there is a lot of sunshine.

This is the prime reason why our sensitive skin needs sunscreen during winter.

Not just our facial skin, our eyes, lips and all other exposed body parts needs protection from sun.

Naturally healing and moisturizing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is required round the year. You should make sure that it is fully absorbed into the skin before you go out. Likewise, apply a soothing lip balm with sunscreen to prevent windburn lips. Repeated application is essential.
