With Raksha Bandhan and a whole lot of festive occasions right around the corner, it’s no doubt that we would want to look our traditional best. Take a cue from Couturier Varun Bahl’s ‘Dream Nouveau’ collection that was showcased at the India Couture Week. After all, the fashion guru is renowned for his global and discerning approach towards traditional Indian-wear since the inception of his label in 2001. Here we break down the look…
The hair
The hair was mostly kept off the face with a low ponytail and middle parting. The best part? With this hairstyle, you do not have to worry about having a bad hair day as it is pulled back. To achieve this look, comb your hair neatly and apply some serum for a smooth and shiny texture. Make a defined middle parting and leave a few strands out on both the sides. Tie the remaining of your hair back with a low pony tail. If you wish, you can use a curling iron just for the front hair, or you can intertwine the hair with your index finger, press and let it fall naturally.
The makeup
The makeup was subtle with an emphasis on the lip. To get this look, first prep up your skin with a primer. Apply the concealer under the eyes and wherever required. Lastly, go for a light foundation. If you are someone who wants your skin to breathe, you can skip the process and just opt for a good compact powder.
For the lips, choose a matt lipstick with darker shades like maroon or plum. If you have dry lips, smearing the matt lipstick can be a bit difficult so moisturise it well the previous night or twenty minutes before.
The eyes were kept simple. Apply a brown eyeshadow or one that is closer to your skin colour. Finish off with a voluminous mascara on the upper and lower lashes (make sure you are wearing a waterproof one as they might run during Pooja ceremonies). If you simply cannot do without a kajal, then draw a thin line to frame the eye.
And lastly, do not ignore your brows. Fill it up with a brow pencil if required.
The attire
Varun’s collection catered to both modern and old school sensibilities, showcasing traits of the artists’ traditional bohemian influence and neo-classical motifs. The range played with curvilinear patterns, asymmetrical lines, and floral and plant motifs whereas the colour palette saw an eclectic mix of ivory, pale pink, peach, burnt orange, pistachio, red, and old rose.
You can opt for a voluminous gehra lehenga with a midriff bearing choli or a rich bordered georgette sari tastefully adorned with floral embroidery and shiny appliques. For a fusion look with Grecian touches, slip into a long and flowy white or pastel gown enhanced with embellishments at the waist. Whereas for something edgier, team your traditional wear with a heavily embroidered jacket or shrug.
The accessories
The attires were fittingly teamed up with long dangler earrings, studded necklaces, polki chokers and hair jhumars. You can go for a complete set or adorn just the earring or choker for a simpler occasion. A hair jhumar will instantly up your entire look. There are several in the market today. Select the size depending upon your comfort level. And lastly, do not forget a bejewelled clutch to carry your essentials.
You can try your own permutations and combinations to bring out the best.
