DIY tricks for hair removal at home

Hair Removal

There is hardly any aspect of life that has not been affected by Covid. As people get confined to their homes, they took for granted many things or were just routine have become a luxury. With salons and beauty parlours shut down over Covid restrictions, pampering yourself has now become a home-based affair. Why not try doing hair removal too! While there are many places where professionals come to your house to take care of you, it is definitely not an ideal situation, given the current pandemic.

As do-it-yourself ideas and hacks are now born out of necessity, many are trying the methods of self-care and self-love, by themselves, at their homes. Beauty routines, hair cuts, colouring and conditioning routines, spa treatments, mani-pedi, and hair removal are just some of the activities that men and women are trying to do on their own, in their houses.

Another impediment that has even hit the at-home self-service, is the lack of materials available. Hair removal is especially a cumbersome and messy activity that needs to be done routinely. Without the right creams or lotions or razors, sometimes you may find it arduous to even think about doing it. However, we are going to help you out by listing some tips and techniques that you can try by using simple items, easily available inside your home.

An important point to keep in mind is to always do the pre and post preparation of hair removal, whether you are trying some DIY tricks or a razor or cream. One should always cleanse and exfoliate with warm water before the hair removal process and moisturize.

1) Sugar, honey, and lemon

Easily found in your kitchen, the ingredients to be used for this method need to be measured according to the area you will use it on. So to begin with, mix a tablespoon each of sugar, honey, and lemon. Heat it in a pan,  on mild flame, till it turns into a wax-like mixture. You can add some drops of water if you think the mixture is too dense.

Now, before you begin the hack, make sure to sprinkle some cornstarch or talcum powder on the area that you are going to wax. This makes the removal process easier and smoother. After the mixture cools down a bit, take a bit in your hand and apply it to the area. Use a waxing strip to cover it, pat it down, and then strip it off in the opposite direction of the hair growth. If you have done it right, the whole process should be painless. Ensure that you use a good moisturizer after the process so that your skin does not remain dry.

Lemon is one of the best bleaching items and will effectively lighten your skin with its Vitamin C. Honey is a natural moisturizer and will help keep your skin supple. Sugar works on your skin to remove dead skin cells and exfoliate them. A well-done combination of the three can easily and effectively remove unwanted hair.

2) Cornflour with milk for hair removal

Many of us are blessed with really soft tiny hair on our bodies. This hack works especially well for those people. Mix half a cup of cornflour with a small cup of milk. Mix it well to get a paste-type consistency. Take out some on your hand and apply it evenly across the part of your body that you want to remove the unwanted hair from. Spread it well and let it sit for 20 minutes. Once you feel the cornflour mask tightening, start peeling it off.

The cornflour and milk combination becomes sticky when applied to your skin. It will tightly hold the hair follicles and when you peel off the mask, the soft hair would come off with it. The milk will also moisturize your skin leaving it soft.

There is however one thing to be noted here. This method works for soft tiny hair only. If you have thick hair growth, this method may not work.

3) Hair removal with a pumice stone

An ancient technique, practiced by many women across the world, over centuries, is that of using a pumice stone. A pumice stone is a rough-hewn stone that is used to ideally remove hard dead skin cells or corns from your feet. Originally, pumice stone is made of water mixing with lava, which gives it a coarse but light surface.

If used correctly, it can ensnare the unwanted hair from your body and remove them. Regular use can get rid of unwanted hair and even stunt its growth.

Ensure that you buy a good quality pumice stone. You must, however, be careful to not over-scrub your skin or it can get bruised.

4) Egg white, cornflour, and sugar

Another natural technique to remove unwanted hair is by using eggs. Now we all know how nutritious an egg could be. But, not many people know that an egg is also an equally potent beauty ingredient. From moisturizing the skin to removing a tan, it can work wonders when combined with the right ingredients.

For unwanted hair removal, mix one egg white with one tablespoon sugar and half tablespoon cornflour. Apply a thin layer to the skin. Leave it for 20 minutes. You can see the egg white forming a thin film over your skin. Once you see that it is dry, peel it off in the opposite direction of hair growth.

Light to medium growth of hair can easily be removed by this technique.

5) Raw papaya and turmeric

If removing unwanted hair is more trouble than it is worth, imagine a hack that can actually stunt and cease the growth of unwanted hair. Scientists have proven that raw papaya contains an enzyme called papain which is an excellent hair remover. Regular use is said to effectively and completely reduce hair growth.

Smash a bit of raw papaya and add some turmeric to it. It is important to try this on a small patch of skin first to check for allergies before using it fully-fledged. Simply rub the mixture on your skin liberally and leave for 10 minutes. Wash off to see some visible difference. Use this before your bath, twice or thrice a week to see reduced hair growth.
