Black, yellow, & white fungus – Everything you need to know

Just like the rest of the world, India has been dealing with the COVID-19 crisis since 2020. While the situation has not subsided yet, another danger is lurking around us. Yes, we are talking about the rising cases of black fungus here. If that was not enough, cases of yellow and white fungus have also been reported from various parts of the country. In fact, the central government has also asked all the states to declare the black fungus as an epidemic.

So, what are these fungal cases? What are their symptoms and how are they different from each other? Let us take a detailed look into this below:

Black fungus

Also known as mucormycosis, this disease has been found both in the COVID-19 patients and the ones who have already recovered from the same. This fungus is very much fatal as it destroys the blood vessels that result in the death of body tissues (tissue necrosis). This can lead to death.

What are the common symptoms?

  • Discharge from the nose
  • Nasal blockage
  • Bleeding
  • Facial pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Watery eyes or redness in the eyes
  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Cough

White fungus

Also known as aspergillosis, this fungus is known to be much deadlier than the black fungus. It mostly targets the lungs and damages them. Moreover, the fungus spreads to several other parts of the body. The effects of white fungus can be seen on the mouth, brain, skin, and kidneys. Reportedly, it occurs in the tongue or the private parts and then spreads to other parts of the body.

What are the common symptoms?

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Reduced oxygen level
  • Skin Legions
  • White patches on the oral cavities
  • Dark spots on the lungs

Yellow fungus

Unlike the black and the white fungus, this one is known to start internally. The yellow fungus causes pus leakage and also leads to slow healing of wounds. It can prove to be fatal at times and lead to severe issues like cell injury (acute necrosis) and organ failure.

What are the common symptoms?

  • Poor or low appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lethargy
