Recipe: Pazham Pori (Banana Fritters)

A popular Kerala tea-time snack made with ripe plantains dipped in a sweet batter and deep-fried, widely enjoyed across Kerala, including during festive seasons.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe plantains (nendran bananas), sliced lengthwise
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour or rice flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Water, as needed
  • Oil, for deep frying

Method

  1. Whisk the flour, sugar, turmeric powder, and salt with water to make a smooth, thick batter.
  2. Heat oil in a pan for deep frying.
  3. Dip each plantain slice into the batter, coating it well.
  4. Slide gently into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  5. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
